A $200 million-plus rap mogul, businessman, and movie producer from the United States, Master P. Master P was among the most prominent figures in hip-hop in the late 1990s and early 2000s. He still ranks among the wealthiest rappers and businessmen in the world.
Early life
Master P was born Percy Miller on April 29, 1970, in New Orleans, Louisiana. Although the city is well known for its music, it may not have been the type of music that he would later compose. In the city’s Calliope Projects, he was raised. He was one of four children, including Vyshonne and Corey, two brothers who later found success as rap artists as Silkk The Shocker and C-Murder.
The Calliope Projects, some of the most infamously violent in the city, are where the family spent its formative years. He spent time with his father’s family in New Orleans and his mother’s family in Richmond, California after his parents’ divorced.
He was an enthusiastic basketball player while he was a student at Booker T. Washington High School and Warren Easton High School, and he was awarded a scholarship to the University of Houston for his efforts. But this was only for a year before he decided to switch schools to study business at Merrit Junior College in Oakland, California.
Career
It would be challenging to choose just two or three jobs from Master P’s extensive list of employments. His career as a rapper, an entrepreneur, and occasionally as an actor are just a few of the various ways he has earned money to build up his net worth.
After the passing of his grandfather, he received $10,000 while still residing in Oakland. He opened No Limit Records, a record shop, with the money. He decided to turn the shop into a record company in 1990 after getting to know his clients’ preferences.
The EP “Mind of a Psychopath,” available only on tape, was his first ever release. Two of his brothers were members of the supergroup known as The Real Untouchables, which recorded this song under the TRU moniker. In the same year, Kevin, the other brother of Master P, died in New Orleans.
Since the 1991 release of his Get Away Clean debut album, Master P has routinely released and produced music. His fame grew in the underground gangsta rap scene with the release of a few additional solo albums and TRU collaborations.
He chose to relocate the label back to New Orleans in 1995, where he continued to expand his business. Since then, he has had variable levels of success with a number of other albums.
Mr. Ice Cream Man and Ghetto D, the album that has his best-known track “Make ‘Em Say Uhh!” are two of the more well-known albums that were released during this time. Over 260,000 copies of Ghetto D were sold in its first week, and it later achieved triple platinum status.
The popular album MP Da Last Don was released in 1998. With almost 400,000 units sold in its first week, the record sold even more quickly than Ghetto D, debuting at the top of the Billboard charts. Even more was released that year by Master P to go along with the album.
Master P’s ninth studio album, Game Face, was released in 2001. In 2004, he saw the debut of his eleventh album. An album honouring Hurricane Katrina victims was issued in 2005 by the indie label Guttar Music, founded by Master P and his son Lil Romeo.
The two together published an album in 2007 that had 32,000 copies sold globally. Master P continued to work with others, record, and perform live, releasing mixtapes every year. All We Got, his sixth collaborative mixtape with the No Limit Boys, was released in January 2017.
Other pursuits
In the late 1990s, Master P established a wide-ranging commercial empire that encompassed a number of rap labels, a clothing line, a management firm, a posh travel agency, a film production company, a video game company, and even a phone sex line.
Despite his varied business ventures, No Limit Records, a ground-breaking label that popularised the Southern Rap sound by selling more than 80 million records globally, remains his most illustrious and probably most lucrative business venture. Master P’s commercial empire alone brought in more than $160 million in 1998. In 2007, Master P published “Guaranteed Success,” his debut book.
In addition to being the founder and CEO of No Limit Entertainment, Master P has seen considerable success as an investor. One of the all-time top indie record labels is No Limit.
In addition to his rap albums, Master P has also had some success in the acting world. Since 1997, he has appeared in a number of feature-length and direct-to-DVD movies. Even with World Championship Wrestling, he had a brief run in 1999. He participated in Dancing with the Stars with Ashly DelGrosso. He had the lowest rating in the history of the competition and was eliminated in Week 4.
He continues to be best known in the acting community for his performance on the Nickelodeon kids’ sitcom “Romeo!” in which he played the father of the title character. Given that rapper Lil Romeo, P’s real-life son, played Romeo, this was especially appropriate. 2015 saw the announcement of Master P and his family’s participation in their own reality series, Master P’s Family Empire. One season and 10 episodes of the show were broadcast on Reelz.
Accolades
At the 1999 American Music Awards, Master P was named Favorite Rap/Hip Hop Artist. In 2005, he was listed as the 36th greatest hip-hop artist by VH1. On VH1’s list of the 100 Greatest Hip Hop Songs, Master P’s hit “Make Em Say Uhh!” came in at position 94.
The Most Influential Rappers of All Time list, compiled by BET,, places him at number 28. He was also included in a BET list of the 25 Most Influential Black Music Executives. In July 2013, Master P became the first member of the hip-hop genre to be inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame.
Personal life
In 1989, Sonya Miller and Master P got hitched. Seven kids total were born to them. According to Miller, the rapper is the owner of 31 homes across the country, 13 vehicles, and 45 successful businesses, she said in her divorce petition from 2014, which was submitted.
According to the company’s own audit, No Limit Records was valued at $136 million, and at the height of his empire, Master P was worth $350 million, according to the woman. She demanded a share of his assets worth 40%. In the end, the 2014 divorce was resolved on private terms.
Master P dedicates time to neglected communities through his work with his own organisations, the P Miller Youth Centers and the P Miller Food Foundation for the Homeless. In July 2005, in Memphis, Tennessee, he was given the city’s key.
Taking an active role in politics in 2007, Master P encouraged voting in front of the public. Barack Obama, a senator from Illinois, received early backing for his bid from Master P, who later endorsed his presidential campaign.
Awarded the Certificate of Special Recognition by Congresswoman Maxine Waters in April 2010 was Master P and his son Lil’ Romeo. The father and son team welcomed Michelle Obama to an event against obesity in late 2010.
